SIG Sauer Firearms: History and Company Overview

SIG Sauer has roots extending back to Switzerland in 1853, when Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser, and Conrad Neher established a wagon factory near the Rhine Falls. The company later entered firearm manufacturing following a Swiss military competition and became known as the Swiss Industrial Company, or SIG.

During the 20th century, SIG Sauer Firearms developed a significant reputation in firearm engineering. Its history includes notable Swiss designs such as the P210 and P220, while the company also expanded its European connections through Hämmerli in Switzerland and J.P. Sauer & Sohn in Germany.

SIG’s American history began in the 1980s. SIGARMS was established in the United States in 1985, initially importing SIG products. The American operation later expanded its manufacturing presence in New Hampshire. In 2007, SIGARMS officially adopted the SIG SAUER name.

Today, the company describes itself as a New Hampshire-based manufacturer with operations encompassing firearms and related product categories. Its U.S. manufacturing and engineering activities form an important part of its modern identity.
